The Ada Pennsylvania Passenger Station was placed in service in December 1887, and served for nearly half a century as Ada's gateway to the outside world, symbols of civic pride and a community hub, at least until the emergence of the rubber wheel and automobile age. The building is characterized by the long low form and functional features typical of passenger stations in this period, including track side location, platform sheltered by deep overhanging eaves, waiting rooms, a baggage room, a ticket office and a ticket agent's room overlooking the tracks. Its stylish period design is characterized by shingle cladding, a broad hipped roof supported by oversized brackets and double-hung sash with six-over-one or eight-over-one lights. On the interior, the building is distinguished by narrow beaded board finishes throughout, a coved ceiling in the waiting room and many original fixtures. The South Gilboa Railroad Station was built in 1905 by the Ulster & Delaware Railroad. It is one of the standardized, partly prefabricated stations erected by the railroad along its right-of-way. The station remained in operation from 1905 to 1932, serving passengers traveling to the nearby Catskill Mountains resort area. The town of Gilboa was established in 1848. Characterized by rolling hills and wooded upland, the area was isolated and slow to develop during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Abundant hemlock forests stimulated the production of tanbark, which in turn contributed to the development of the leather tanning industry in the Catskill region. The Towns of Guilford and Sangerville are in the southwestern part of Piscataquis County. In the Guilford section, the surface of the land is generally uniformly covered with a soil of sandy loam. This area in the earliest of times of the white man's penetration was important for stands of timber, for which the cutting was first undertaken in 1800. The Guilford Township was one of those conveyed to Bowdoin College by Massachusetts and the sale of timber lands helped support that institution. Its purpose was the guidance of ships, the carriers of cargo destined for the development of industry and commerce, into Boothbay Harbor approximately 1 ½ miles away. The mission and buildings are the same today. In 1888, a dead angle was put into the lantern at Burnt Island Light to prevent ships from being wrecked on the rocks called the Cuckolds. About 1890 the light was changed from fixed white to fixed red with two white sectors covering the fairways into Boothbay Harbor. This made the dead angle unnecessary. The Burnt Coat Harbor Light Station was established in 1872 as a guide to Burnt Coat Harbor on Swan's Island. The 1871 edition of the Annual Report of the Light-House Board states that the range light at Burnt Coat Harbor was erected as a guide to this harbor of refuge. It further commented that this harbor is commodious and safe, and is a distant 36 miles from the nearest place of safe anchorage on that coast. The virtually intact exterior features of the dwelling and tower are important examples of the form that these components took in the early 1870s. The Western and Atlantic Depot is the oldest standing commercial structure in Dalton and commemorates the founding of the town and its origins as a trade center on the Western and Atlantic line. The depot is all that remains of the original center of town. The railroad link from Atlanta to Chattanooga was completed in 1850, and the depot was constructed in 1852 on a piece of land that Mark Thornton had deeded to the state of Georgia in 1846 to be used solely to establish a railroad station. The Ringgold Depot is one of Georgia's few remaining antebellum depots. It was built of native stone and reflects a utilitarian style, rather than any of the architectural trends of the day. The Clay School was built in 1888 by the Detroit Board of Education and is the oldest school building still standing in Detroit. The building was designed by architect J. B. Tarleton. Built as a neighborhood school, this masonry structure replaced an 1873 frame school building on this site. When Clay School was built in 1888, the street was known as Pitcher Street, then Stimson, then Myrtle Avenue, and today as Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
