The Slate Ridge School in Whiteford, Harford County, Maryland, is the design of Otto G. Simonson, one of Baltimore's best-known early twentieth-century architects. Whiteford, like the adjoining slate-producing towns, was enjoying an economic boon when its two-room school, #20-5, burned on December 31^st, 1910. At least eleven Town truss bridges are known to have spanned the Batten Kill during the nineteenth century. Of these eleven, only two examples remain in Washington County. The Eaglevllle Covered Bridge, erected by local builder Ephraim Clapp in 1858, has been stabilized and returned to vehicular use following flood damage in 1977. The Shushan Bridge, also built in 1858 by Milton Stevens, has survived as the result of local preservation efforts. Ravenhurst is a mid-nineteenth century, Carpenters' Gothic house, probably built about 1854-1857. This large house was an addition to an earlier stone dwelling thought to have been built about 1800. The large, board and batten addition is an excellent example of Andrew Jackson Downing's picturesque country house. In addition to being architecturally significant, it was the residence of two important Baltimore County residents; Major General Isaac Ridgeway Trimble, an engineer, railroad executive and Confederate officer; and the Hoen family, noted for their printing firm in Baltimore, The Ravenhurst estate combined a number of tracts, including Elizabeth's Purchase, Coxes Hope, Wilson's Security and Union. Like many of the organizers of early railroads, the directors of the N.A.& S used the concept of a combined river-rail network as their guiding principle. The first section of track was completed on January 14^th, 1851, from New Albany on the banks of the Ohio River to Salem, 35 miles north. The Beaverkill Bridge is an example of the popular Town Lattice Truss type, characterized by its intersectional diagonal members secured with wooden pins. This bridge also features an unusual variation of the type, as it was constructed with additional diagonal members at the ends of the trusses. The additional planks radiate in a fanlike pattern from the bearing point. According to bridge historians, this variation distributes the load over a smaller area, eliminating the need for long abutment seats of bolster beams and providing greater strength.
