The property contains two school buildings; Central School, which was built ca. 1882 and expanded to its current form in 1950, and the De Soto High School, which was completed in 1927. Central School was the first building erected specifically for the public school system of De Soto, and it was used as a school for the better part of a century. Built in 1878 and enlarged in 1898, this brick structure was erected to accommodate the educational needs of an expanding community. In the last half of the nineteenth century the Catonsville area (Baltimore County has no incorporated towns) grew rapidly, particularly with the start of the Baltimore and Catonsville Passenger Railway in 1862. The area population nearly doubled in this period. The county school commission responded to this growth first by building the 1838 section onto an earlier frame structure and then replacing the frame building with a brick building in 1898. John S. Baker emigrated to Cincinnati from Westfield, N.J. in 1814. In 1817 he married Ester Flint, daughter of Hezekiah Flint and a man of wealth. It is assumed that Mr. Baker managed his wife's estate upon the death of Mr. Flint. Mr. Baker built the house on a plateau above the Ohio River and set back from Madison Road, the main road for the then-rural suburb of Cincinnati. This house is now situated on a large lot in association with late 19^th and early 20^th century architecture. The Gilpin's Falls Covered Bridge exemplifies the type of structure patented by Theodore Burr of Connecticut in 1817. In Burr's design, a series of king-post trusses was combined with a long wooden arch, a combination which resulted in a stronger bridge. Single king posts had been used since the Middle Ages for short crossings. Nineteenth-century bridge builders learned to combine a series of structural triangles into a unified span. In Burr's truss, the arch, upper chord, and the diagonals act under compression; the vertical members and lower chord act under tension. In 1854 the Mahoning Railroad laid its tracks through Aurora stimulating a small cottage industry of cheese manufacture into one of the larger areas of cheese production in the United States. By 1904 when the existing station was built, four million pounds of cheese was being shipped from its freight area. The site housed two main east-west sets of tracks and two spurs to handle the export of cheese. A disastrous flood in 1913 wiped out the industrial area of Aurora. Changes in production, economy, and the rising cost of raw milk accounted for the abandoning of cheese production and rebuilding of the industrial area, leaving the station the only significant structure associated with the commercial processing of cheese in Aurora.
