Designed by a highly skilled local architect for a well known Milwaukee attorney, this ninety five-year old former residence is an appealing, relatively well preserved example of the Victorian Gothic style. Its last know use was office space. Originally a single-family residence, the building was erected for Jason M. Downer, and after his death on September 1, 1883, belonged to his widow Alcy Eliza Miner Downer. On her death it passed, in 1889, to Immanuel Presbyterian Church of Milwaukee and in accordance with the terms of Mrs. Downer's will was used as a rest home and guest house for Protestant clergymen. Edward Diederichs bought the lot from George C. Wood of Kentucky on October 11^th, 1852, and was living at this address at the time the Milwaukee City Directory for 1854-55 was compiled. It appears that fire all but destroyed the dwelling in December, 1859. Diederichs had the house rebuilt and was residing there once more by June, 1860. The house was built for Edward Diederichs c. 1852-54 and rebuilt in 1860. On February 15^th, 1862, he sold the heavily mortgaged property to Maurice Grashof of New York for $8,200. It changed hands again on March 2^nd, 1864, when Henry Mann bought it from the State Bank of Wisconsin for $10,000, Mann sold to Ethelinda (Mrs. John) Johnston in August, 1895. The

This was the first Presbyterian congregation and Presbyterian church edifice west of the Milwaukee River, and the third Presbyterian church in Milwaukee, Calvary is one of the city's older surviving churches and an important, relatively well-preserved local example of the Victorian Gothic style. It was constructed at a cost of $60,000 and dedication was held March 3^rd, 1872. Although church historian Elizabeth Ells states that Calvary was enlarged in 1887, this was not the case. The church was redecorated and refurbished in that year, but saw no new construction until 1910, when a two-story brick addition, 18 feet X 18 feet x 20 feet, housing the pastor's study and church office, was erected on the southwest corner of the building. The site was chosen in 1890, the architect two years later. Construction began in the spring of 1893; the cornerstone was laid early the following year; and when City Hall was dedicated in December, 1895, the basement and six of the eight floors were finished. Completion of the seventh floor followed in 1896-97, the eighth floor still later. Total expenditures for the building and its furnishings came to more than $1,000,000. The competition held in 1891 to select an architect for City Hall attracted eleven entries and sparked heated debate in the Common Council before the commission finally went to H. C. Koch and Co. On May 9^th, 1799 a resolution was introduced at a meeting of the Freeholders that a work house be built at Mt, Holly and that the sum of four thousand dollars be raised. The resolution was postponed for a year, but it appears that there was much discussion as to the employment of prisoners while in confinement. The next record concerning the building of a jail appears in the records of the board on May 13^th, 1807 when the two commissioners were appointed to purchase a lot in the town of Mt. The date of erection is uncertain. When photographically documented in 1960, it was believed that the house was constructed ca. 1760, However, since that time, the house has been dated to ca. 1835. The interior was remodeled in the 1880s. Partially destroyed by fire in 1965. The size of the original section of the house is 24'-2 x 20'-7, two-and-a-half stories. The overall length including L-shaped addition is 53'.

This grand, imposing, richly ornamented Neo-Renaissance edifice is a major landmark of Milwaukee's south side, the only Roman Catholic basilica in Wisconsin, and one of the nation's most important Polish-American churches. Many of the materials used in the construction of St. Josaphat's originally constituted Chicago's Federal Building. The transformation from public building to church came about as follows. By the mid-1890s Father William Grutza and his parishioners at St. Josaphat's agreed that the parish needed a new church and retained Erhard Brielmaier to draw the plans. The First Universalist Church is the second home of the Universalist parish founded in Provincetown in 1829. The church was begun in 1847 and, according to local sources, is the oldest building on the Lower Cape still in its original state and being used for its original purpose. The most significant features of the church are its elaborate three-stage tower, often (though incorrectly) called the Christopher Wren Tower, and the trompe d'oeil paintings which decorate its ceilings and walls. The Universalist Church was built by ship's carpenters under the supervision of Benjamin Hallet of Barnstable. The lighthouse was constructed by the United States government after a number of tragic shipwrecks in the vicinity of Absecon Beach were attributed to lack of navigational signals. The beam is higher above sea level than any other light on the New Jersey Coast except the Twin Highland's Lights. The tower is circular and rises to a height of 171 feet above city grade. It has 3 major levels: the ground floor, the storage room beneath the lens and the lens chamber itself. The stone foundations are approximately 8' deep. All Saints' Episcopal Cathedral, Milwaukee Wisconsin

All Saints' is one of the nation's earliest Episcopal cathedrals. Gothic Revival in style, it is one of Milwaukee's older surviving churches and an important early work of the architect, Edward Townsend Mix. Noteworthy features of the interior are the stained glass windows, dating largely from the nineteenth century and forming, through the consistency of their compositions and color schemes--dominated by deep, rich hues--an exceptionally harmonious ensemble. The edifice was built as Olivet Congregational Church, and, according to a contemporary newspaper account, it was acquired by the Milwaukee Episcopal diocese June 1, 1872 for $35,000. The house was built by whaling Captain Edward Penniman in 1867-1868, who had shipbuilders from Wellfleet do the work. It has remained in the family, is in very good condition and is within the Cape Cod National Seashore. Captain Penniman lived in his house until his death in 1913. It was willed to his wife, Betsey Augusta Knowles Penniman, who occupied it until her death in 1920. Betsey Augusta Penniman inherited the house from her mother and lived there until her death in 1957. Highland Light, built in 1857 is the successor to the first lighthouse built in 1797, and is the oldest and tallest lighthouse on Cape Cod. Up to 1931 it burned oil, now with electricity installed it burns a single 1000 watt bulb of 2500 candle power. The huge bulls eye lenses stretch this out. It can be seen for twenty miles under normal conditions.

Built in 1883, this was the Finest Hotel in Town at the Time

The brick, two and a half story hotel was built in 1883. Anton Dern was owner of the hotel which had the reputation as one of the finest hotels in Wausau. Dern was one of Wausau's earliest pioneers, arriving from Germany in 1845. When he retired from managing the hotel in 1904, his son and stepson continued in the business. In the late 1950s the hotel changed hands and became a residential hotel. The central tower on top of the mansard roof was removed sometime after 1900. Abandoned in March 1981, the building was demolished in April 1981.

Construction began in early June, 1888, and was completed in September, 1889. An addition was made on the east side of the building between June 1, 1910 and March 1, 1911. This addition went unrecorded in the newspapers of La Crosse and no drawings for this addition have been found. However, historic photographs show this addition under construction and are dated. A large addition was made on the north end of the original building between December 1, 1931 and April 21, 1933. This structure, dating from 1827, and relatively unaltered has been carefully restored and is typical of early 19^th century meeting houses on Cape Cod. The history of the First Congregational Church of Truro commences in 1709 when the town was incorporated. About 1709 or 1710 a meetinghouse was constructed in the Pond Village, which gave way in 1720 to another building, this time on the Hill of Storms, North Truro, where the Town Cemetery was already located After more than one hundred years the building in North Truro became dilapidated. The population had largely moved to the South; it was difficult for children, the aged and infirm to attend worship therefore on March 6, 1827 it was determined to build a

F. C. Bogk House, Milwaukee Wisconsin

Frederick C. Bogk was well known in Milwaukee business and political circles during the early decades of the 1900's. Born in Sheboygan Falls, he came to Milwaukee as a child and after completing his education, worked for the Wisconsin Central Railroad, rising to the position of land commissioner. In 1908 he joined the Ricketson Mineral Paint Works and later became president of the company. For a time he also had an interest in Bogk and Pfleger, an insurance and real estate firm. He was elected alderman from the fifteenth ward in 1904 and after serving two terms, was elected alderman-at-large, a position he held from 1908 to 1920. This house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and executed under his supervision.

A fine example of late 18^th century mansion in the Georgian tradition. It was the home of Captain Elijah Cobb (1768-1818), a colorful skipper who left his memoirs. The construction of the house is mentioned by Captain Cobb in his memoirs. This year 1799, the beloved Washington, the Father of our Country died, - this year, our first son was born - this year I took possession of the farm, built up my house, and the family moved into it on new years day 1800. This Georgian type two-story house topped by a captain's walk, still stands on the Lower Road. It is a good example of a prosperous Captain's House on Cape Cod, in the late 18^th century.
