Architect John Scott

John Scott (1850-12/5/1928) Detroit, Michigan (F.A.I.A.)

One of Detroit's leading architects for many years, in 1877 elected a member of the old Western Association of Architects. Scott was a native of Ipswitch, England, and was thoroughly trained for professional practice before he arrived in this country during the 1870s.

With a younger brother, Arthur (died 1930), he set up an office in Detroit under the firm name of John Scott & Company, and for many years participated actively in work in the city. Best known examples of the firm's executed designs include the old Cadillac Hotel, Wayne County Building, Receiving Hospital, and many of Detroit's finest homes, as well as industrial and commercial buildings elsewhere in the state.

During the 1920s, the Scott brothers moved to new headquarters in the Dime Savings Bank Building, and continued practice until 1926, when John retired to spend his remaining years at his home in Rochester, Michigan. Meantime Arthur Scott left for Canada and lived in Windsor, Ontario, until his death in 1930.
