Thomas Simmons James, Mobile Alabama

An architect of note in the South, and an exponent of the Greek Revival style, he designed a number of public buildings and dignified mansions in Mobile. Among the surviving examples of his work are: the Barton Academy, a three-story brick and stucco building with dome, the oldest public school in the state; Presbyterian Episcopal Church, 251 Government Street, 1837; Christ Church at Church and Emanuel Streets; City Hall, Royal and Church Streets; and the Augustine-Ottenstein House, 207-209 North Jackson Street; the Madame de la Verte house at 15515 Government Street, and the Bragg House.
