Architect Frank J. Helmle

>Frank J. Helmle (3/5/1869-7/10/1929) New York, New York (A.I.A.)

Formerly a partner in the firm of Helmle, Corbett & McMurray, he left his native city of Marietta, Ohio, to acquire architectural training in New York, and began his career in that city about 1900. During a period of twelve years Mr. Helmle carried on his work alone, engaged in that time in designing Banking Houses in Brooklyn, among which were the Williamsburgh Savings Bank, 1915; the Williamsburgh Trust Company Building; Dime Savings Bank; Nassau Trust Company, and the North Side Bank.

In 1912 he joined Harvey Corbett in partnership, and in 1923 following completion of the Bush Terminal Building in New York (of which they were architects) established an office in the building. Helmle & Corbett were also architect of the Power & Light Co. Building at Allentown, and the Guarantee Trust Co. Building at Hackensack, New Jersey. During a still later period, after William H. McMurray joined the firm, other important works were designed by the partners, notably: George Washington Masonic National Memorial, Arlington, Virginia; Horace Bushnell Memorial Auditorium, Hartford, Connecticut; and Henry Stambaugh Memorial Auditorium, Youngstown, Ohio.
