Bunker Hill Bridge was originally built over Lyle's Creek as an open span in 1895. In October of the preceding year, the Catawba County Commissioners had brought action against the owners of Bunker Hill farm for failure to build and maintain a bridge on the old Island Ford Road. Mary Lee Smith and the other owners erected the footings of the bridge the following spring with stone from a nearby quarry. The wooden span was probably built under the direction of Andy Ramsour with the assistance of local laborers. In 1900 the bridge was covered, and in 1921 the old clapboards were replaced by a metal roof.

Part of the bridge property was sold to Rena Huitt Bolick in 1928 for $400 and other considerations. Mrs. Bolick maintained ownership until 1965.

The bridge is presently in the care of the Catawba County Historical Association, with assistance from the State Department of Archives and History.

Bridge Description

Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is an eighty-foot span that crosses Lyle's Creek near Claremont in Catawba County. Built on drywall stone ramps, the bridge employs a combination of the multiple king post truss and the Haupt truss systems which are joined with trunnels. Vertical board and batten siding covers the structural members. A gable roof of standing seam tin protects the bridge. Plank tracks or treads run the length of the wooden floor.
