The Corunna High School is the oldest remaining school building in the city of Corunna, Michigan. It housed all of Corunna's public school students, kindergarten through high school, from its completion in 1909 until 1952, when a new high school was built, and remained in use as a public school until 1976. It is one of the few known remaining public school buildings designed by prominent Lansing architect Edwyn A. Bowd, who designed many of Lansing's leading buildings from the 1890s to the 1930s. The Plum Island Light Station is part of the system of aids to navigation through the eastern entrances to Long Island Sound built by the federal government from 1806 to 1899 and remains active today. This system of lighthouses had regional significance aiding the coastal trade of New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. The Plum Island Lighthouse was built 1869 and remained a manned station until it was deactivated in 1978 and replaced with a steel tower. When the north side of the Yellowstone River adjacent to the Crow Indian Reservation was reopened for white settlement in 1888, W. H. Norton filed a homestead claim on 160 acres which later became the site of the town of Columbus, Montana. Due to Norton's extensive business and political involvement in the early development of Columbus, he has achieved widely recognized local historical significance. The W. H. Norton House, built in 1899, stands at the northwest corner of the Stillwater County Courthouse block. Prior to settling his homestead claim along the Yellowstone River, W. H. Cortez High School was the only public school (kindergarten - 12th grade) serving the city of Cortez from 1909 to 1949. It continued to function as an elementary and middle school until 1968. Over this sixty-year period (1909-1968) every public school student in Cortez attended the school. The construction of the school in three phases (1909, 1924, 1935) reflects the growing population of the community, as well as targeted periods of public investment in education in Montezuma County. Poe Reef Light Station marks the dangerous Poe Reef in the Straits of Mackinaw, a route used by ships passing between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the Great Lakes have served as a major transportation corridor for commercial traffic. As early as 1852, over 4 million tons of goods crossed the Great Lakes, largely consisting of lumber and grain. By 1910, the amount of goods shipped increased to 80 million tons, mainly iron ore and coal. In 1915, limestone emerged as an important bulk commodity in the region. The Calvin Coolidge Elementary School in Flint Michigan was constructed in 1929. Designed by the Detroit firm of Malcomson, Higginbotham, and Trout, the school building is an intact example of a late 1920s urban neighborhood school in Flint. Its existence represents the rapid population growth of Flint in the first half of the twentieth century in response to the burgeoning auto industry. The City of Flint began with the 1819 establishment of a trading post by Jacob Smith near a crossing of the Flint River that the local Native Americans had used for centuries. Libby Island Light Station was ordered built by President James Monroe in 1822 and has never been rebuilt. According to old journals at the station there were thirty-five wrecks from 1856 to 1902, and out of this number only fifteen lives were lost owing to the efficient work and valor of the light keepers at the station. Among the ships lost to the sea near the Libby Island Station were the Schooner Caledonia of Windsor, Nova Scotia. The captain and crew were swept overboard by the breakers but two passengers were rescued by the volunteer lifesaving crew from Starboard in 1878. Bash, who taught there from 1925 to 1953 and whose family then owned the farm on which it stands, the schoolhouse was erected in the early 1850s as an independent school and was constructed of brick made in a nearby field. Hailed as a model for other school districts when the building opened in 1909, the school features sixteen classrooms, a teacher's room (with a fireplace), a principal's room (also with fireplace) and an adjoining reception area, washrooms and a gym in the basement, and an auditorium on the third floor. Established in 1829 and completely rebuilt in 1872, the Whaleback Light Station occupies a shallow rock ledge at the outer entrance to Portsmouth Harbor. Whaleback light was the second of two lights built to guide vessels along the Piscataqua River. Its location at the outer entrance of the harbor served as a beacon between the Isles of Shoals light off New Hampshire and the inner harbor light that had been established in 1789. During the nineteenth century, Whaleback light was classified as a secondary sea-coast light, an indication of its significance to the proximity of major shipping lanes and the great volume of traffic into and out of the harbors at Portsmouth and Kittery. Cleveland County Training School was built in 1927 for African American students. The site has a long association with African American education in Shelby, containing the only public school for the municipality's black youth from around 1895 until 1957, when the Shelby Board of Education constructed Hunter Elementary School on Pinkney Street. Cleveland County Training School, which offered academic and vocational courses to first through twelfth-grade students, became known as Cleveland Training School around 1949 and operated as such until the Shelby school system's 1967 integration. Cleveland School then housed sixth-grade pupils until 1977. Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church purchased the property in 1985. The Ram Island Light Station was established in 1883 as a guide to Boothbay Harbor. It is the lone occupant of shallow Ram Island. The need for a light station that would guide shipping in and around Boothbay Harbor was clearly evident by the nature of the commerce at this busy port. As shown in the 1883-84 edition of the Maine State Year-Book Boothbay contained a broad range of mercantile establishments and manufacturers that relied upon maritime transportation. In addition, Boothbay was rapidly developing a summer tourist industry that supported no fewer than seven hotels and boarding houses. The Cleburne County High School was constructed in 1936 and partially funded by a Public Works Administration grant, the high school when the Federal Government worked to restore the economic and social life of the nation following the Great Depression. Starting in 1933, the Public Works Administration sought to refine the education system and revitalize the stalled building of schools, many of which were one-room schoolhouses predating 1900. Ram Island Ledge Light Station, Cape Elizabeth Maine

Ram Island Ledge Light Station was established in 1905 to mark the hazardous and oftentimes submerged shoals that populate the northern side of the entrance to Portland Harbor. In 1902 Congress appropriated $83,000 toward a projected estimate of $166,000 for the construction of a light station on Ram Island Ledge. This action was taken after the steamship California ran aground on the ledge in 1900. Work had not begun, however, before the British schooner Glenrosa struck the reef during a heavy fog on September 22nd, 1902. The Chapin School building in Chicopee, MA, was originally constructed in 1898 as one of fifteen graded primary school facilities built in the city between 1890 and 1925 to replace the former ungraded, single-room schoolhouses. The Chapin School was built largely in response to the upsurge in population in the Willimansett neighborhood of Chicopee following the construction of the nearby Willimansett-Holyoke Bridge in 1891. Between six and seven o'clock on December 19th, 1887, Sioux Falls turned out to celebrate the arrival of its fourth railroad. Officers of the railroad, the mayor and city council, backed by a host of citizens and the Damon Division Band were on hand that evening as the last spike was driven. At that final moment, every whistle in town was turned loose in celebration. The passenger depot was not yet completed, but the local newspaper predicted that when completed it would be the most slightly and costly on the line west of Chicago. Sited on a high bluff along Hempstead Harbor, the Clapham-Stern House is an impressive mansion that catches the eye from any vessel sailing the water. The house is equally marvelous when approached from a long, curving drive that is purposely designed to impress the visitor when the mansion comes into view. A number of large mansions were built on large estates along the harbor and the north shore of Long Island in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries making this area a desired place to display one's success that could be visible from both land and sea. The house was also one of several properties that contributed to the creation of the Village of Roslyn Harbor in 1931 as a Millionaire Town.
