The exact building date of the Ballard Road Covered Bridge is unknown, but it may have been about 1850 when Lyman Ballard established a grist mill in the area. The road and covered bridge take their name from Mr. Ballard. The limestone abutments for this bridge undoubtedly came from one of the limestone quarries nearby in New Jasper Township. We found that county atlases and histories have little to say about New Jasper Township beyond the fact that there were limestone quarries in the area. It would seem that the Ballard Road Covered Bridge and the nearby historic Dean farmhouse form one of the few historic sites in New Jasper Township. The Dean family were early settlers in this area. This typical late 19th-century, small-scale passenger depot was built in 1895 and served as one of Shelbyville's two stations until passenger trains ended service, May 1971 in this case. The L & N leased its line to the Chesapeake & Ohio through here, and both roads operated trains, The C & O maintained it as a branch of its Louisville-Cincinnati to Washington, D.C., service. The former Dayton High School Building is a typical example of between-the-wars school buildings, with a mild Collegiate-Tudor Revival architectural flavor largely provided by minimal glazed white tile trim and Tudor-arched brick entrances. Architecturally based upon three strong 19th-century sources in varying degrees, the Mill has retained its integrity as a statement of young industrial architecture. First, Baughman's Mill has the plain-faced masonry surfaces and the simple false roof of all early factory architecture in England and America, thereby unabashedly announcing the strength of its utilitarian purpose. Constructed in 1911 at an original cost of $11,939, the Stanford depot must be seen as a vestige of a once prosperous operation of passenger service on the L & N railroad. This building allowed a new mobility for the local residents and was a central point of cultural activities for the county seat community. Airy Castle, as he called the place, is a fine example of a large-scale Italianate villa, reportedly designed by Bowen himself, with a distinctive admixture of French Second Empire and perhaps even English Tudor Revival elements. The Risum barn is particularly interesting for the construction of its wood silo as an integral part of the barn, and for its early date of construction, being built between 1890 and 1892, according to the owner and the grandson of the builder. Carl Risum (1847-1899), a native of Norway, came to this country when seven years old, with his father, Hans Ludwig Risum, a printer who supposedly came to Rock County to work on the Norwegian language publication Emigrantin, Carl obtained the farm from his father in 1876, after serving in the Civil War. Constructed in 1904, this building was the first of several apartment buildings that contributed to the historic development pattern of large-scale residential real estate developments. The Walnut Hills area had experienced an influx of residential development as early as the 1860s. It was a desirable residential location because of its short travel distance from downtown Cincinnati and its neighborhood business district. In 1872, horse-drawn coaches traversed the long slope of Gilbert Avenue as it extended from downtown Cincinnati to Peebles Corners, the main transportation hub and commercial center of Walnut Hills. The H-O Company Elevator on Perry and Fulton Streets on the south side of downtown Buffalo has a long history of operation, both in terms of the site and of the companies that founded and ran the elevator and cereal production facility. The original grain elevator and mill belonged to Edward Ellsworth & Company. In 1896, Ellsworth added a brick and frame elevator to his typical wood cereal mill. Between 1896 and 1908 Ellsworth appended incidental buildings for storage, laboratory facilities, and office space. The operation remained relatively small but reasonably prosperous. Ellsworth entered the cereal and flour trade as an important brand-name manufacturer through the acquisition of another well-known producer, H-O Oats. The Wollenberg Elevator, Buffalo's only surviving example of a wood crib-binned elevator, occupies an inland site alongside the tracks of the Belt Railroad. In size, the Wollenberg resembles a typical country elevator rather than the large waterfront wooden transfer elevators of which Marine B, consumed by fire in the early 1960s, was the last survivor. The elevator's 25,000-bushel capacity is less than 1/40 that of the largest transfer elevators built in Buffalo during the closing years of the nineteenth century; Connecting Terminal had a capacity of 950,000 bushels, and Export 1,000,000 bushels. The surrounding streets and avenues were once one of the city's finest residential neighborhoods, but proximity to the center of town has resulted in commercial encroachment. The Town of Presque Isle originated as a sawmill and railroad town in 1905 when J.J. Foster built the first sawmill in what then came to be called Fosterville. Foster gave up the lumbering business in 1910 to William S. Winegar. Winegar renamed the town after himself. Winegar was entirely a self-sufficient company town. The mill printed its own currency called ginseng which could be exchanged for goods at the company store. The mill built houses for its workers and controlled the electricity for the town from one main switch. Nearly every man in town worked at the Winegar mill. The Gempeler round barn, nestled in a picturesque hilly setting typical of western Rock County, is significant for its ingenious construction, with its main story supported by an inverse pylon made up of an oak trunk upside down in the center of the basement. It was wider at the top to provide bearing for the floor, according to the former owner and son of the builder, who watched the construction as a 12-year old boy. The Selby Shoe Company initially began as the Drew-Selby Company and was a partnership between Irving Drew and George Selby. They made women's fine welt shoes in Portsmouth, Ohio. By 1877, the partners parted ways and Selby established his own company in Portsmouth. Drew continued manufacturing shoes in Portsmouth until 1937, when the company moved to Lancaster, Ohio. Selby's fledgling company prospered, eventually constructing a large, main factory in the center of Portsmouth that included several buildings (now demolished). Of the 3,850 identified timber truss highway, canal and railroad bridges built in Ohio, by 1998 less than 4 percent, or 135 bridges, are extant and only 61 carry traffic. The Barkhurst Mill Covered Bridge, also known as Williams Covered Bridge, one of five covered bridges remaining in Morgan County and one of only three on its original site, exemplifies the multiple kingpost truss design covered bridge in Ohio. Barkhurst Mill Covered Bridge was built by John Shrake, one of Ohio's foremost bridge builders during the period from 1850-1875. Of the many covered bridges built by Shrake, only three are still standing, and only one of his designs, the Barkhurst Mill Bridge, is known to have been built in Morgan County.
