During Reconstruction, the state of Georgia created its first statewide public school system. From the start, the state's public schools were segregated by race. The East Dubuque School is an outstanding example in Illinois of a school in the late Romanesque Revival style. It is the only major historic public building in East Dubuque, and was the dominant educational institution in the town for 85 years. Built in 1893 as both the grammar school and high school for East Dubuque children, it also supplemented the one-room schoolhouses in the surrounding countryside by serving as a high school for these small school districts. The New Point Comfort peninsula has served as a landmark to navigators entering Mobjack Bay since the seventeenth century and has been known by its present name since before 1690. Ocracoke Light Station was one of the first lighthouses authorized for the state of North Carolina. Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest remaining lighthouse structure on the North Carolina coast. From 1897 until 1963, the South Bass Island Light marked Parker's Point, the southwest tip of South Bass Island, the largest of the three Bass islands (North, Middle, and South). However, the old channel exhibited dangerous, rock-filled conditions. As a result, channel improvements and a lighthouse provided a safer situation and encouraged the growth of the water transportation industry. The establishment of a Coast Guard Station in the early 1900s also encouraged navigation.
