The early history of the Episcopal Cemetery is fraught with uncertainties compounded by a lack both of duly recorded deeds and lost Vestry minutes. While the Anglican Church in North Carolina had been established by law in 1701 and a chapel erected in Pasquotank County by 1708, the church fell into disfavor during the American Revolution and did not reappear in the county until 1825 when Christ Episcopal Church was organized in Elizabeth City. Local tradition attributes the founding of the Episcopal Cemetery as 1828, even though no record can be found to support this date. The Michigan Central Railroad was chartered as a privately owned corporation in 1846 to purchase the state-owned Detroit-St. Joseph railroad line that had been constructed only as far west as Kalamazoo before funds ran out and to complete it to Chicago. The first Michigan Central train entered Chicago in 1853. In 1854, when the Great Western Railway was completed between Niagara Falls and Windsor, Ontario, the Michigan Central became part of an important direct line between the East and Chicago. The Michigan Central became and remained Michigan's most prosperous railroad line and the main Detroit-Chicago line was the keystone of that prosperity. The Dowagiac depot was one of several substantial depot buildings constructed by the Michigan Central beginning in the 1880s.

The Niles Railroad Depot, built 1891-1892, was associated with the development of the Michigan Central Line and the City of Niles. It is one of the larger and finer surviving late 19th-century railroad stations in Michigan. In 1837 the Michigan Legislature authorized the construction of three state-owned railroads. The Michigan Central, one of them, was to extend from Detroit to St. Joseph. The railroad, however, was completed only as far west as Kalamazoo before the state's funds were exhausted. In 1846 the line was sold to a group of Boston financiers; they changed the road's western termination from St. Joseph to New Buffalo and, in so doing, routed the line through Niles.
