Robert C. Hupp was one of scvoral enrly Detroit automakers who achieved moderate success, but was ultimately unable to compete against Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. He began working as a common laborer at the Olds Motor Works in Detroit in 1902. Hupp and E.A. Nelson, a stylist with Packard, decided to build a high-quality, medium-size automobile and they launched the Hupp Motor Car Company on November 8, 1908, with a capitalization of only $25,000. Charles D. Hastings, who invested $8,500 in the new firm, became general manager in 1910 and Robert Hupp left the company the following year. The four-cylinder Hupmobile was an immediate success. Sts. Peter and Paul's Jesuit Church was originally built as the Cathedral of the Detroit Diocese. Not much information concerning its erection is available, but in 1899, on the occasion of the celebration of the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of its consecration, a short history was prepared and printed in the souvenir program for this event. A copy of this program was found in the Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public Library, and most of the information hereinafter recited, emanates from this source. The city of Marshall, Michigan was founded in 1831 and named in honor of John Marshall, then Chief Justice of the United States. In 1832, the first schoolhouse, a two-story log building was erected. In 1835, the first brick building (as well as the first in Calhoun County) was erected. This was the National Hotel, and the building still stands. On March 7^th, 1859 Marshall was organized into a city. The colonial house, located at the corner of North Kalamazoo Avenue and Prospect Avenue, was previously owned and occupied by Mr, Charles T. The Ballard House was built by Judge Marcus Lane in 1832. Before completion, it was acquired by Arden H. Ballard, and has ever since been known as the Ballard House. It was built by James Forsyth from his own drawings. The house was owned successively by Isaac Newton Conklin; Mrs, Helen Swift; Dr. James Heustis. In 1936 the owners were Dr. and Mrs. James B. Breakey, who also owned the Breakey House at 1885 Packard road, near Ypsilanti, another very fine example of the Greek Revival Period. Also known as D.W.C. Cigar Corporation and D.W. Hacker Company, Inc. The Bernard Schwartz Cigar Company is primarily significant for its involvement in Detroit's labor movement during the 1930's. Mechanization and the depression had resulted in a series of paycuts and longer hours for the Schwartz Cigar Company's workforce of Polish women. On February 16, 1937, after all other efforts to redress their grievances had failed, occupation of the building, along with four other factories, began. The sitdowns were among the longest and most bitter in the city. On March 16^th, the Detroit Police acted without court authorization and stormed the Bernard Schwartz Cigar Company in an effort to evict the women sitdowners. Howes sold to Robert G, Clarice April 25, 1837; Clarke to Robert McClelland about 1840; McClelland to Benjamin Dansard July 19, 1853; Dansard to K.G.Bumpus August 23, 1917, (Letter from Jessie K. The First Congregational Church of Vermontville was constructed during the Civil War and dedicated on November 30, 1864, It was built to meet the needs of the Union Colony, a religiously bonded group which had settled in Vermontville in 1837, The Colony was formed in East Poultney, Vermont, and the church is quite similar to various prototypes found in New England. This is especially true in the roof framing, which is of a type in common use in that area in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The village of Vermontville was settled by a group of pioneers from East Poultney, Vermont, who were followers of the Rev. Sylvester Cochrane, a Congregational minister. Also known as National Can Company, this Building was Demolished in 1981

Also known as National Can Company, General Aluminum and Brass Casting Works, Helms Corporation. Bohn Aluminum is a complex of industrial buildings with one office building. The Bohn Aluminum office building is somewhat architecturally distinctive. It presents Neo-classical elements from a functionalist plan. The building displays pilasters and gabled parapets which define the three sections on each of the two visible sides. Much brick ornamentation is evident. The building has painted brick walls and is rectangular in plan. Attached to the office building is the main industrial building which is of steel-framed reinforced concrete construction. Adjacent to this are two more steel-framed, reinforced concrete industrial buildings, one of which has a saw-toothed roof. All of the buildings are two stories high.

John D. Appleton, the builder, came to Brighton in 1839 and earned his living as a carpenter and joiner. He built this home which was close by the Presbyterian Church and later built a large public house opposite the Brighton Hotel. This was known locally as the Appleton Block. the Kelley family, into whose hands the home came in the mid-1880's, were substantial citizens of Brighton. The first Kelley, Aaron H. Kelley, arrived in Brighton in 1837 from Dixboro, Michigan and built a water-powered saw mill which Kelley operated for some time. He was an early merchant of Brighton and owned a farm near there. St. Katherine's Episcopal Chapel, Williamston Township Michigan

John Harris Forster was a pioneer, explorer, miner, and engineer in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Early in his career he was employed by the government as a surveyor on the Great Lakes and the Mexican borders. In 1860 he became superintendent of the important Pewabic and Franklin copper mines in Houghton County. Forster, in 1864-65, represented the entire Upper Peninsula in the Michigan Senate. He returned to the Upper Peninsula to become an agent for the Sheldon and Columbian Copper Company and represented the Douglas Mine, About 1870 he was appointed chief engineer for the Portage Lake-Lake Superior Ship Canal then being built to bisect to Keweenaw Peninsula. In 1874 Forster retired to his dairy farm christened Springbrook near Williamston.

In 1889, during a booming period of growth and expansion, the citizens of Bay City found that their City facilities were antiquated, cramped and insufficient to serve the needs of a then very quickly growing community. In 1860, the population of Bay City had been only 800. By 1889, the population was over 35,000. Thus the new city needed new facilities. It was planned to build a new building which would serve a combination of purposes. It would be a city hall, a police station and a public library. This home was built between 1864-and 1868 for LeGrand Lockwood, who died in 1872. It sold to Charles D. Mathews in 1876. It remained in the Mathews family until 1939 when it was leased to the City of Norwalk. Purchased by the city in 1941. LeGrand Lockwood (1820-72) for whom the house was built, was a native son of Norwalk whose family had been associated with the development of the town since 1645. He was the head of one of Wall Street's best-known and most reputable brokerage concerns. These three six-family tenements were built by the Ponemah Millls and rented to their employees. They are one of three types of workers' housing built by the Ponemah Mills. The basic type which supplied most of the housing was a two-family tenement one-and-a-half stories high. The company started building these when they first began construction of the mill in 1866. The three six-family tenements were the second type constructed sometime before 1900. After 1900 a third type, a four-family tenement not much larger than the original two-family tenement, was built. In 1934, when the company began selling its housing, Ponemah Mills owned 206 dwelling houses. In 1960, Ponemah Mills owned only three houses for the top officers of the company. The

This is a large frame house built in 1799 and was enlarged in 1867. The house was built c. 1799 by and for Ebenezer Learned, master carpenter. May 1812 the property was deeded to B. M. Ballou. In 1861, the property was bought by Connecticut Governor Buckingham for his daughter and son-in-law, General J. W. Aiken. The property stayed in the Aiken family until 1940; Mary Aiken, daughter of General Aiken was the last to occupy the house. The property was sold to Earl Cleary in 1940 and to John E. The original owner was probably Col. Converse, who, with his wife, lived in the house for many years. Col. Converse gave the Converse Memorial Building to the local library. The house was owned by B. Haley before Kermit Belcher acquired it about 1959. The house has an irregular shape approximately 35' x 60', two stories high plus attic and cellar, with a three-story tower over the entrance. The house was moved in the 1860's from, its location at the southwest comer of Bradley and Orange Street to the southwest comer of Lincoln and Bradley. Hobart B. Bigelow is recorded in the New Haven Directories of the 1850's as a Machinist. By the time he owned the Benjamin House (when it stood on the comer of Orange and Bradley Streets), he had become the president of his firm and by 1879 he was Mayor of New Haven. Bassett & Co. store was reputed to be the oldest existing hardware store in the United States and was the oldest business in New Haven, having been continuously operated by a surviving partner. It possesses a remarkably early cast-iron store-front frame and one of the earliest remaining hoists (manually operated) in the state. It went out of business in the mid 1960s.
