Construction of the Bacon County School began in 1933 due to an increase in the school-age population and the merger of the town of Alma and the Bacon County school systems. When opened in 1934, the Bacon County School served grades one through eleven until the 1940s when new junior and high school buildings were built behind the school. A cafeteria was constructed in 1953. In 1957 and 1958, new junior and high schools were built elsewhere in Alma and the buildings remained in use as an elementary school. In 2003, the 1940s junior and high school buildings and the cafeteria were demolished. From 1991 through 2003, the 1934 school was used for Head Start and pre-K through third grade. The

The Wooster public school system had been divided into four districts in 1850, one in each ward of the city. The District #4 school (later known as the Walnut Street School) was built in 1853-4 on the site of the present school and operated at least through 1896. The present building was built in 1902 as a part of the school board's rebuilding of their ward system conducted between 1891 and 1909, Of these buildings, all but the Walnut Street School have been demolished. The Starr Hotel provided lodging for the people to whom Mattoon owes its existence, the railroad crews. Seasonal farm crop workers, blue-collar workers coming into town looking for factory jobs, and hoboes rounded out the Starr's clientele, but its lifeblood from the beginning was railroad men on route layovers. Although there were many other hotels built to handle the heavy railroad traffic, the Starr Hotel and the U.S. Grant Hotel are the only historic hotels that remain in Mattoon, Illinois. The Pines was built in 1896 by Captain Edmund Leighton Tyler, a railroad magnate and son of one of the co-founders of the city of Anniston, General Daniel Tyler. Captain Tyler and his brother, Alfred, fought alongside their father, General Tyler, at the Battle of Bull Run, and subsequently joined their father and Samuel Noble on the original board of directors of the Woodstock Iron Company in 1872. Edmund Tyler served as the superintendent and general manager of the Anniston and Atlantic Railroad, a company he formed for the Woodstock Company in 1883. Stephen D. Cowen was born in 1824 and by 1850 was farming in Jackson County, Georgia. In the early 1850s, he moved to Acworth with his wife, Eliza Anntinett, his three children, India, Ann, and Edward, and his eight young slaves. In 1854, he purchased land lots 10 and 29 and soon after built his two-story frame house. Two more children, Arch and Steven, were born before Eliza died in 1855. Cowen married Elizabeth Ann Tanner in 1856 or 1857 and had six children, T.R., Ella, Henry, Girtie, William, and Cora, before Elizabeth Ann died in 1874. The Albany Theatre was constructed in 1927 as a focal point of community arts and entertainment in downtown Albany and southwest Georgia. The land on which the theater was constructed was owned by the estate of Samuel Farkas, a Hungarian Jewish immigrant who became a prominent citizen in Albany in the late 19^th century. He owned a mule trading business, a livery stable, and a farm implement business. Adolph and Ike Gortatowsky leased the land from the Farkas estate and developed the theater. Architect Roy A. Benjamin was commissioned by the estate to design the building. Mount Zion Baptist Church was first established December 8^th, 1866, when Rev. R.R. Watson and a group of followers organized the Mount Zion Baptist Church congregation in Jerry Watson's blacksmith shop Dec. 8, 1866. Mount Zion Baptist Church is the first African-American Baptist church formed within the original city limits of Albany Georgia. An examination of Freedmen's Bureau records reflects that as early as December 1865, two buildings at Wooten Station were to be moved to Albany for church and school house. While not stated in records, it is inferred that these structures became the Baptist and Methodist worship houses. The St. Nicholas Hotel is located in the county-seat city of Albany in the southwestern part of Georgia. While this area of the state was not opened for settlement until the 1820s, Albany soon became a trade center and its growth caused the original county to be subdivided and Dougherty County was created in 1858 with Albany as its county seat. The city's growth was insured by the advance of the railroads. It was due to these railroads and Albany's increasing role as a railroad and commercial center that the need for a new commercial or traveler's hotel was felt in the early 20^th century. In December, 1900, the station was dedicated and became the division headquarters for the Cleveland, Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis Railroad, commonly called the Big Four. The three divisions were Galion, Springfield, and Indianapolis. The Galion building housed the engineering corps, the division superintendent, the trainmaster, and the clerks and stenographers. All trains stopped in Galion to change crews, including the New York to St. Louis trains, for which Galion was the only stop between Cleveland and Columbus. The peak passenger usage probably was during and soon after World War I, when 32 trains a day stopped, including mail trains. Railway express was servicing as many as 20 trains a day into the early 1950's, when 21 men were employed there.

The Lincoln Theater was developed by an African-American fraternal organization; constructed by an African-American construction company; managed by an important local African-American entrepreneur; and was a center for stage and screen entertainment for Columbus' African-American population for decades. It is one of the best remaining vestiges of early 20th-century African-American history in the city. Columbus' African-American population predates the Civil War. As early as 1810 there were 43 free colored citizens among Franklin County's population of 3,400 people. The free colored population doubled between 1840 and 1850 with an increase from 805 to 1607 people. Another large increase in population occurred during the early 20^th century when the population grew from just over 9,000 in 1900 to almost 39,000 in 1940.

The Sumpter Valley Railway Passenger Station was completed in 1910 at what became the western terminus of an 80-mile narrow gauge line connecting with the Union Pacific at Baker. It is significant to Grant County and the state as the only substantial building now standing which is associated with the historic enterprise which played an important role in the development of the timber industry and hard rock mining in northeastern Oregon. The Sumpter Valley Railway was chartered in 1890, and construction was carried out between 1891 and 1910. Passenger service on Oregon's longest narrow gauge line was discontinued in 1937 in the midst of the Great Depression, but freight hauling carried on through another decade before the line was abandoned. The Morris Ranch Schoolhouse is a fine example of the quality of stonework produced by the German craftsmen in the Fredericksburg area in the 19^th century. Stylistically, however, the structure clearly reflects the mainstream of American architecture in the 1880s and 1890s, in its use of Romanesque Revival detailing. The distinguished appearance of this building, with its heavy stone walls, stands in distinct contrast to the characteristic frame schoolhouses of late 19th-century Texas. The pretensions of the structure indicate a considerable expenditure of funds on the part of the Morris family and a strong interest in the education of the children of the ranch staff. This area was first settled in 1806 and the first mill was built here on Cherry Fork in 1817 by a General Sam Wright who sold it in 1846 to Paul Harsha. Caldwell's 1880 Atlas of Adams County mentions that a W. B. Harsha had excellent mills here. This prominent Harsha Family has given its name to both community and the covered bridge. The town of Harsha once had a dry goods store, a blacksmith shop, and a shoe shop in addition to the Harsha Mills. Little of this activity remains in the area today. Since it opened in 1880 Higginsport School has been the most prominent visual landmark in this small Ohio River village (1990 pop:300). Its commanding presence in the community is a testament to the important role public school architecture had for over a century in helping provide a suitable environment for educating young girls and boys. Before closing in 1988 Higginsport School was believed to be the oldest operating school in Ohio. In 1804 the present site of Higginsport was surveyed into lots and the village of White Haven was platted. Growth was modest, so in 1816 the village was replatted by Colonel Robert Higgins and renamed Higginsport. A post office was established in 1830 and by 1880 the population reached 862.

The H. Black & Company, one of Cleveland's major manufacturers of women's suits and cloaks, started out as a notions house. The Black family, Jews of Hungarian descent, began their business in their home by producing ready-to-wear clothing based on European patterns. The Black Garment Factory was established in 1874. The company, famous for their Wooltex products, at one time housed the largest manufacturer of women's coats and suits between New York City and Chicago. The company's name was later changed to the H. Black Garment Factory, named after Herman Black. In 1903 Morris A. Black succeeded his father as company president. In 1907, H. Black and Company moved from Cleveland's old garment district to a new factory on Superior Avenue.

Although created in 1858, Hardeman County, located on the Red River in northwest Texas, remained unsettled throughout the Civil War and Reconstruction periods, primarily due to occupation by hostile Indians and lack of transportation through the hilly terrain. Prior to the ratification of a new state constitution in 1869, the residents of Canton and surrounding Madison County had witnessed little progress in the establishment of a public school system. The majority of schools tended to be private male and female academies, such as the Sharon Female College (1836) and the Sharon Male College (1838), later known as Madison College. During the 1890s, when Norwalk Harbor was being developed by federal appropriation for increased commercial traffic, the approach to that harbor past the Norwalk Islands presented a hazard to deeper draft vessels. A decision was made to build a replacement for the old (1868) lighthouse on Sheffield Island, itself a replacement for a masonry light tower built in 1826. Two new aids to navigation were to be located on water-bound sites at either end of the group of islands, to guide ships into the channel behind the islands from both the east and west.
